They say birthdays are a time for reflection. It's a time to look back at what has been accomplished, count blessings, and sometimes make adjustments. This is particularly significant for me this year.
Any year that I launch not one, but two new titles is already a great year. Granted, one of those titles was late being launched because of my health challenges. I'm still proud of it. I maintained contacts and made new ones, which also makes it a great year. I educated myself about combining the art of being an author with the business of it. That is what lead to this blog being started. Returning to substitute teaching also makes it a great year, because well, I just love teaching. There is something about being around little ones that just does my heart good, even when they are being mischievous. That's probably why I like writing for children.
In terms of counting blessings, this blog is not long enough. I will say though, that this is not something that should only happen on birthdays or special occasions. I think the motivational speakers I've heard over the years refer to it as "an attitude of gratitude". This also works on the level of one's attitude being so important to how life happens. So I count my blessings daily and thank the Almighty for them. I mean having the words to write, and the messages to share is a blessing in and of itself, and I count myself privileged to be able to do it.
As for making adjustments, this one also happens more than just on my birthday. I am one of those people that always wants to help out, but I have given myself permission to say no when I either can't help or when helping the other person will be harmful in some way. Giving oneself permission to balance interests with work is huge, too. I realized when I nearly lost it, that I am not ready to give up either my writing or drawing. So the biggest change I made last year is actually an ongoing one - to have more balance between my teacher life and my author/illustrator life. I make a point of spending time in my studio, not only to work on my books but to write the blog, do other drawings, and recharge my creativity. It truly is one of my favorite parts of our home.
Yes, birthdays are a time for reflection. This year, as I celebrate my birthday with my husband and kids, I will also thank God for another trip around the sun, and continue on this journey. And I will keep counting blessings, appreciating accomplishments, and adjusting as needed. Because without those things, the journey is just going through the motions and not worth as much.
As always, I love your message.
